An ultrasound exam of the breast does not involve any radiation. High frequency sound waves are used to look at breast tissue. A hand held probe sends sound waves into the breast. An echo is picked up and the information is sent to a computer to make an image of your breast. The sonographer doing your exam will answer questions about the procedure, but they cannot discuss the results of the procedure. A radiologist is a doctor specialized in reading sonogram. The radiologist will give the results to your personal doctor. Your doctor will answer any questions you may have about the findings.
